Justice is premised on the notion that every human life is equally important, and so all people must be dealt with fairly, with differences such as race, nationality or religion put to one side. The idea of equal treatment inherent in justice forms the basis of other concepts, such as democracy, where everyone is given the equal right to choose their political leaders, and self-determination, which allows all people to decide on their own political status. There is also another side to justice, which demands that wrongdoers be subject to targeted and proportionate retribution for their crimes. |
